I first found out about Betz White from the While She Naps podcast and I began following her blog and her work is amazing. She is so incredibly multitalented and her new book Present Perfect does a great job displaying all her different skills into a series of projects.
The projects in Present Perfect 25 Gifts to Sew & Bestow are a bit more complicated so Betz White suggests starting off as a “confident beginner.” There are 25 really great and well laid out projects in the book, but don’t get it if you’re looking for a resource on how to sew. You should definitely have some basic knowledge going into it.
Since this book is full of projects that are intended to be gifts, Betz also has little sections called “stitched with meaning.” She gives suggestions on ways to make a project more meaningful by using vintage fabrics, upcycling old dresses or baby clothes. I love these suggestions because you could use these patterns to transform a cherished fabric item into a truly special gift.
Betz has such an amazing variety of projects and uses so many different techniques. One of the things that constantly impresses me about her work is her eye for blending different textures and fabrics. The reverse appliqué of the cosmos infinity scarf creates such a unique look.
The book has present ideas for everyone; babies, adults, men, women. The projects are so diverse that you will be able to find something no matter who you’re making something for. This hexie turtle is adorable. It’s no secret that I have a bit of a hexie addiction, so I instantly fell in love with this turtle.
Here’s another great example of Betz’s ability to combine techniques. This super cute coffee cash coin purse has a flex frame that pops open and has a quarter attached using an Indian embroidery method called shisha or mirror work. I love the details like this, it’s all so well thought out.
It can be so hard to find good handmade project ideas for men, but Present Perfect has several really great ones. I love this cargo tablet sleeve, it’s made of waxed canvas fabric and has such a great look to it. The instructions in the book are all extremely clear and easy to follow and paper patterns are included as well.
Present Perfect has so many really amazing projects and if you’re still struggling to come up with Christmas gifts, do yourself a favor and get a copy! With such a great variety and so many different techniques, I’m sure you’ll be able to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list!
