Modern One Block Quilts Cover
I was really excited to receive an ebook review copy of Modern One-Block Quilts: 22 Fresh Patchwork Projects*
, and it did not disappoint! I was immediately struck with how easy to follow everything is, there is a terrific combination of illustrations and photographs. Everything is very clean and clear. The book starts out with a great section on learning to sew, so even if you are a complete quilting beginner, Modern One-Block Quilts can help! It lays out a variety of different types of quilting blocks and how to make them. I know that when I finally choose which of these I want to make, this section is going to be immensely helpful! I also thought it was a neat touch that both easy-sew and no-waste instructions are included, I love that it caters to any difficulty level. Templates are also included as well as instructions on how to use them.
sewing basicsThe quilt patterns are absolutely gorgeous, and they live up to the book title. The patterns are very modern and all have clean, fresh designs. The designs in this book are the reason quilting has peaked my interest. For a long time I only thought of country style quilts and had no desire to try my hand at them. But when books like Modern One-Block Quilts, Quilting Happiness, and the slew of amazing ones I’ve found on Pinterest have changed how I feel about quilting!
20131126-201143.jpgEach pattern has three sizes so you can make a baby, twin, or queen size quilt. As a beginner, I appreciate that the patterns aren’t just for larger blankets, I can get my feet wet with a smaller baby blanket.
While there are so many amazing patterns, I think this one is my favorite. There’s something about the bright colors on the white background with the black that is just so striking to me. It has a fun feel, yet it also feels so modern and sophisticated, I just love it.

I was really impressed with the wide range of quilt designs, there are 22 different patterns. There is truly something for everyone in this book.
20131127-064429.jpgReading through and looking at the patterns, I was struck by how similar cross stitch and quilting really is. So many of the quilting patterns could easily translate to cross stitch or blackwork. It’s been awhile since I did a geometric cross stitch, but I think I might resurrect the style with one of these quilting patterns!
