Silhouette Tissue Paper Canvas Art

I am super excited to be partnering with Silhouette for their Black Friday promotion. They sent me some fun supplies to play with and I have some projects I’m super excited to share with you! Plus at the end of this post I’m going to share details about the Black Friday sales going on at Silhouette!

I was on the fence about getting a Silhouette CAMEO for months, I absolutely loved the idea of them, but I really worried I wouldn’t use it. I knew it would come in handy for cutting out English paper piece templates, but I wasn’t sure how much I would use it beyond that. I started reading up about all the other things it could cut and it was fabric and felt that sold it for me. I never should have worried though, I have found so many uses for it already and I have a lot of projects planned that I still want to try!

This last week I enlisted Evie’s help in making some artwork using bleeding art tissue paper. I saw a tutorial on Fiskars website and I had the idea of adding an additional element with a shape I cut from vinyl on my Silhouette CAMEO. I got my art tissue paper from Dick Blick, but you can get it from Amazon as well. Just make sure it says art tissue paper, regular wrapping paper is colorfast and will not bleed.

For the first one I used black vinyl to cut out a design of the New York skyline from HeroArts that was the same width as the canvas, these were 8×10. I attached the vinyl right to the canvas and used the scraper to smooth it down.

We painted the canvas with water and then Evie placed the strips of art tissue paper onto the wet canvas. The paper creates a really neat effect and is almost like watercolor. Evie wanted to keep painting more water over the top which does result in the colors being a little bit lighter.

She had a lot of fun overlapping them and seeing the colors bleed into each other. We peeled off the paper a couple different times and then she would add more layers on top. The tissue paper will color your skin, so be prepared to have colored fingers for the rest of the day.

I had an idea for another version where I intended on having her do the paper and then we would take the vinyl off so you could see the negative space where they shape was. Well, this didn’t turn out how I hoped but I did manage to salvage the project and I still think it looks great! For this one I used the camera design from Simple Stories. I wanted to do something that wasn’t too complicated and that would work well as a silhouette.

But what I learned is that the vinyl sticks really well to the canvas, but it’s not airtight. So unfortunately the water seeped under the sticker. Thankfully it was such a simple shape because I just repositioned the vinyl back onto the canvas and pretended like it never happened. The art tissue paper left dye on the white vinyl but a wet paper towel took it off easily.

Evie and I had a lot of fun making these and there are so many possibilities, I think a monogram would look awesome! This is a great project for your kids to be able to help make some Christmas gifts for grandparents too!

It’s so fun, I want to make one myself where I consider color mixing a bit better than a 4 year old does! I had a hard time holding my tongue when she was putting colors next to each other that I knew wouldn’t mix well. 🙂

I ended up asking for it for my birthday and I’m so glad I did. It’s got so many more uses than I expected! I really love it and it’s so much easier to use than I expected! You should get one! 🙂

I love my silhouette! But I’ve never used art tissue paper. How cool! I do a lot of painting with my boys like your camera canvas. But I’ve never been able to get the canvas down tight either. So I’ve been using MDF board instead. I paint it white and then apply my vinyl for them to paint over. I wonder if the art tissue paper would work the same on that…?

Hmm I’m not sure about the MDF board! Would regular watercolor work on it? That would probably be a good test to see if the art tissue paper would.
