WIP Finish – Another Hexie Headband

One of my 2015 goals was to finish more projects that I have started. I started the year off strong and then tapered off. Instead of finishing existing projects I just keep starting more…

Stephanie at Swoodson Says posted a link with different headband patterns she’s made and it reminded me of a long, long forgot WIP. Last year I started playing around with making English paper pieced hexagons out of old t-shirts. I had this idea to make a headband, I hoped that even with joining them the hexagons would be stretchy. It didn’t work quite like I envisioned but I still think it went well.

I used 3/4″ hexagons that I made with the Large Fiskars Hexagon Squeeze Punch.* I made them as I would any other hexagon except instead of quilting fabric, I cut up some old t-shirts.

Last August (I told you this was long forgotten…) I contacted Diane from CraftyPod for some advice and she said I should definitely use some lightweight interfacing. I talked with someone at Joann’s and settled on Shape-Flex Woven Interfacing.* Some sort of interfacing is definitely needed because even just pulling out the papers the fabric was stretching like crazy, I can’t imagine trying to sew the headband without it.

Stephanie suggested trying out the Alice and Lois headband pattern and she suggested using a woven fabric for the back. I used a scrap of Kona cotton I had and some fold over elastic from my friend at Bowtique Emilee.

I felt really silly that I had put this away for so long. I was really close to finishing, joining the remaining hexagons and assembling the headband probably took about an hour and a half. I am curious to make one out of regular quilting cotton hexagons to see if the jersey material really adds anything. They were a bit trickier to work with and they shifted a bit when I was adding the interfacing. All things considered though, I really love how it turned out and I want to make lots more headbands!

I made another hexagon headband last year, check that one out here.

Have you ever gone back to a project you put down and were embarrassed by how close you were to finishing?
