Chrissy from Muse of the Morning is doing a week of Big Messy Art and it seemed like a really fun idea! Summer is the perfect time to get messy with crafts because you can head outside and when you’re done, just hose off.
We had a mud painting playdate with Evie’s best friend. We went over to her house with a bucket, a bag of soil, and a bunch of different homemade paintbrushes. I made one with yarn, one with pipe cleaners, one with a giant pom pom, and two different ones with foam.
I bought a bag of potting soil from Dollar Tree, you could easily use dirt in your backyard. The girls mixed up the mud by pouring water into the bucket and stirring it with a stick. We kept the consistency watery enough that it could be used as a paint, but thick enough that it would stick to the brushes.
The girls used the fence as a canvas which worked out great, you could use paper or a piece of wood. The pom pom paintbrush worked the best, it was the most absorbent and could be used over large areas. My favorite effect though was the pipe cleaner brush. I think I will come up with another craft project to use that brush with paint.
The girls had fun but in normal three year old fashion, it wasn’t an extremely long craft project. They painted for about 15 minutes and then moved onto something else. But it was a fun, messy time!

Past summers we’ve painted with water. Even less messy and just as enjoyable!

My daughter would call you a genius… I’d call you one too, this is an awesome idea. What kid doesn’t love to play in mud.
What kid wouldn’t want to hear, “here’s a giant paint brush go paint with mud”.
Becca says
It was fun because it was all easy clean up by doing it outside. A hose works wonders!

As I child I just liked digging in the mud! We almost had them doing that but decided to try out the painting instead! It was a bit cleaner!

I remember digging in the mud as a child, I loved getting dirty! My daughter is a little more timid about getting dirty, but she still loved this activity!
