A Very Hexie Christmas – Hexie Ornaments

A Very Hexie Christmas

I have a million Christmas gifts I want to make, so naturally I decided the proper thing to do would be to start a series of tutorials leading up to Christmas instead of actually making those gifts… And the best part? They’re all going to feature hexagons! I’m a little hexie obsessed lately (ok, for a couple years now) and I’ve been having fun implementing them into Christmas decorations! So here’s the first one, a hexie ornament!

Supplies:
EPP hexagons of any size – I used 1.5″
Felt (My favorite wool blend felt comes from Benzie felt)
Clover Wonder Clips* – These definitely aren’t necessary but they make it a lot easier!
Ribbon or twine
Scissors
Pen

Take a basted hexagon of any size. If you are not sure how to do this or need help getting started with English paper piecing, I highly recommend checking out this video series from Diane at CraftyPod.

Use one of your templates to trace a hexagon onto felt for the ornament back and then cut out.

Carefully remove the template from your hexie and iron. I’ll admit, I might have skipped this step on a couple of them, but it does make it easier to assemble.

Cut a length of your ribbon or twine and sandwich it between the felt and fabric hexagons. This is where the Wonder Clips come in handy, I use a ton to keep everything in place.

Top stitch around the edge of the hexagon making sure the ribbon or twine is far enough in to get sewn securely in. This could be done by hand if you don’t have a machine, but if you do that, I would suggest putting a layer of fabric glue in between to make sure it’s secure enough to keep the string in place.

And that’s it! You can get creative and do some embroidery on the back if you want, but you can also just whip these up really quickly without it.

I started getting fancy with them and adding patchwork to the hexagon before I basted it. There’s so much you can do with them, have fun! And if you make one, I’d love to see it! Tag it with #averyhexiechristmas on Instagram and tag me at @hugsarefun

And stay tuned. There’s more Christmas hexie goodness to come in the coming weeks!
