Book Review – Stitch Love

Book Review - Stitch Love from Hugs are Fun

I have been eagerly awaiting Stitch Love from Mollie Johanson since I first heard about it months ago! Mollie is the amazingly talented lady behind Wild Olive and someone I am pleased to call my friend. The other weekend Mollie and I went out to breakfast and she gave me a copy of her book and it is so unbelievably adorable, I immediately knew I needed to make a project for Evie.

Whale Purse from Stitch Love | Hugs are Fun

Evie picked this super cute whale purse which was perfect, I’ve been wanting to make her a purse for awhile. Whenever we go on a walk she always picks up treasures that I end up having to put in my pocket. The purse in the book is a wristlet but I knew that it would be more useful to Evie with a longer strap so I made it a cross body bag instead.

Every day since she picked out the whale Evie has asked if it’s ready yet. When she came downstairs to find out it finally was, she was beyond excited.

I might have made the strap a little too long. I offered to shorten it and Evie refused saying it was perfect and she loves it and it’s just like a diaper bag.

At first Evie said she wanted this amazing guinea pig plush and I was pretty disappointed when she changed her mind and wanted the whale purse instead. Seriously, how cute is this guy?

Stitch Love contains 25 projects and over 100 embroidery motifs, it’s seriously jam packed with cuteness. Mollie did a great job coming up with a really unique and fun assortment of projects that can be easily customized. There are plushes, clothes, a quilt, ornaments, toys… really too many things to name! Some of the projects are embroidered with the motifs included in the book, but most are projects turning the designs into actual objects like this yeti.

This mouse furoshiki cloth is one of my favorite project ideas that Mollie came up with! Furoshiki is a Japanese wrapping cloth that can be used as an eco friendly substitute to wrapping paper. Well Mollie had the brilliant idea to make this mouse customizable to different holidays! Valentine’s Day? No problem, give him a heart and cupid wings. There’s birthday, Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween, Christmas, Hanukkah, and an American flag for the 4th of July. I love the idea of making a variety of these cloths for any situation that might arise!

While all the projects are super fun and amazing, where Mollie has always truly shined are her embroidery patterns. There is such an incredible variety of animals and they are all organized by region. There are plenty of real creatures, but I just love the addition of fantasy creatures and dinosaurs. Mollie also snuck some fantasy creatures into different categories, notice the mermaid and Nessie on the sea page?

Every time I think I’ve decided which animal is my favorite, I notice another one and change my mind. Mollie did such an amazing job with this book and I am just so excited for her!
