My children are extremely indecisive about Halloween costumes. They both cycled through a ton of costume options before finally settling on them. Mira wanted to be a Care Bear and Evie wanted to be Link.

I immediately knew how I was going to do the Care Bear costume, I got a plain pink hoodie and made a felt circle to attach to it. I couldn’t find a hoodie that didn’t have a zipper, so I got it a couple sizes too big so I could more easily slip it over her head. I also anticipate needing to have some extra space to layer warmth underneath for Trick or Treating.

I used Benzie Felt and cut out each of the shapes using a pattern I made. You can download the file here. Alicia from Felt With Love Designs gave me the advice to use Heat’n Bond* to attach the layers of felt together. This made stitching the large shapes together a lot easier. I originally considered only attaching the circle temporarily with safety pins, but ended up stitching it down with embroidery floss. I figured it could still be removed with a seam ripper if I needed to, and I wouldn’t have to worry about it coming off on Halloween.

I used this pattern from Gleeful Things to make the ears. For the pink part I used a pink fleece that I had around and the inside is plushfelt. She has the pattern done with hand stitching but I sewed it all together with my machine and then hand stitched it to the sides of the hood.

And because you can’t be a Care Bear without a heart on the butt, I added a little felt one. We’ve already done a couple Halloween events and the pants needed to be washed, thankfully the Benzie Felt held up!

For Evie’s costume I started scouring around for a tunic pattern to make that wouldn’t be too hard to make and I came across this tutorial on Geeks Under Grace. The idea of using a too big shirt for the tunic was brilliant and we picked one up from Walmart that was the right color for like $4.

The shirt underneath came from Old Navy and I made the hat from fleece using this pattern from Instructables. I was wary of my ability to make a good enough hat so I ordered this one* from Amazon too and it’s a great option, especially for the price. The belt is just a strip of brown felt with a yellow felt circle stitched on. I was going to sew velcro to it or secure it in some way, but Evie put it on by tying it in the back and it worked so why do the extra work? The pants she already had and then we got some brown boots from Target. She was a little annoyed at first because “Link’s boots do not have buttons or fur” but she decided these ones were acceptable.

Josh has been working on an impressive Master Shield from cardboard, foamcore, and paper mache. He’s still working on the final coats of paint and we need to figure out how we are going to add a strap, but I think he did an extremely impressive job!

Both of these costumes were really easy and could still be made in time for Halloween! What are your kids (or you!) going to be for Halloween this year?
