An English Paper Piecing Experiment

An English Paper Piecing Experiment by Hugs are Fun
The last thing I need is a new project, but I just couldn’t resist! My friend Jessica sent me a photo of an English paper pieced quilt where the hexagons were made of triangles. I immediately fell in love with the idea and had to try it right away.

The photo used solid fabrics, but I wanted to use prints, I have so many scraps from the hexagon quilt I’m making.

I don’t love basting the triangles as much. I’m not sure if it’s because of the size (each side is 3″) but I was having trouble keeping the edges tight enough when I was basting them.

I am extremely happy with it though, I love the way it looks. I think I might slowly start working on making more of these hexagons for a quilt, all of them using different colors. I have far too many projects to finish first, but I do think it’ll be pretty fabulous when I finally have the time to focus on this one!

Have you seen any projects lately that you just had to try out immediately?

I don’t have a place to keep my sewing machine permanently set up so I rarely use it. It’s such a pain to get out every time. So EPP is such a great solution, it’s so portable and easy to start and stop. I find it so satisfying!

Ooh! Lovely! I have just started another new EPP project (oh dear, how do I expect to finish anything when all I do is start new stuff?) this time I have gone BIG! 4″ diamonds to make a tumbling block quilt, requested by my daughter. Like you I find that basting them is not so much fun, and involves pins so is a bit bloody! But sewing them together gives great fast results!! Looking forward to seeing more of your beautiful triangle/hexagons! xx

Oooh I bet that will look fantastic when it’s done! Have you tried using clips instead of pins to hold it when basting? I try to avoid pins as much as possible because I am almost guaranteed to stab myself!

Also, I know what you mean about not finishing projects with starting so many new ones! It’s so hard to wait to start something when you have an idea!

I’ve been afraid of regular quilting because of the precision cutting. But EPP makes it so simple to get the clean lines, it’s so much easier than it looks!

I keep seeing this lovely patchwork! I made loads of things this way as a teenager and am really going to have to have another go. It has been almost 30 years though – will I remember what to do?
