Vintage Quilt

My mom brought me three boxes of partially finished quilts from my great grandma. They’ve been in a closet for years, and with my recent hexagon obsession, my mom figured it was the right time to dig them out.

I was really hoping to be able to use the hexagons that she had cut out and use them in the quilt I’m making but sadly, they are too small. She wasn’t paper piecing them, instead they are being sewn together so they are cut to size. There are 13 completed hexagon flowers that I definitely want to do something with!

There is an entire box of these completed puffy squares. I definitely plan on sewing these together eventually. I haven’t laid them out so I’m not sure how big the blanket would be. If it’s too small I might make a couple doll blankets for the girls.

There’s a few of these squares completed and all of the pieces cut for more. I doubt I would actually finish this one, so I’m debating using the pieces to make hexagons, I could probably get two hexagons out of each triangle that’s cut. There’s a lot of fantastic fabrics here.

I am so nervous though at the idea of cutting up something my great grandma started. I have no idea when these are from, they are at least 30+ years old. I would hate to ruin them! Have you ever gotten a WIP from a family member? Did you finish it they way they intended or did you repurpose it for something else?

Ooh, all that delicious fabric! Reminds me of my childhood – very 70’s. I would make them as intended, but I miss my grandma and want something ‘she made’, so that is nostalgia talking πŸ™‚

My great grandma left behind a huge box of finished quilts, so I feel differently than if there weren’t any completed quilts. But I am still very conflicted!

Oh my word! I would give my right arm to have been gifted those. I think I’d finish them off in the way they were intended if I could, Have just started playing with some small hexies myself and have really got the bug for playing with those

I love hexies! It’s totally awesome that you got your grandmothers quilt pieces. I agree that you should try not to be nervous – I think most grandmothers would be glad to see their pieces put to good use, even if the final product wasn’t what they’d originally envisioned.
