October TSNEM – Stumpwork Embroidery

October TSNEM - Stumpwork Embroidery from Hugs are Fun

I was looking through my list of things I’ve tried this year and I’m pretty pleased. Generally I’ve learned a lot of great new things and there have only been a few I haven’t really loved doing. Unfortunately, this month was one of those. I tried out stumpwork embroidery for a post over at &stitches and just had a really hard time getting into it.

As soon as I started looking into stumpwork I got overwhelmed. There are so many different types and techniques and there aren’t a huge amount of resources out there. Kristen from Hey Paul Studios has done a lot of stumpwork and was so amazing with helping me. She pointed me in the right direction and suggested the book Beginner’s Guide to Stumpwork*.

The weaving is the same general idea that I used for the bakers twine circular weaving project I did, but it is done around half of a ball. I got a bag of styrofoam balls from Michaels and just cut it in half with a serrated knife. The weaving was pretty quick, which is good because I had to do it three times before I got it right.

I used Aimee’s tutorial at &stitches for making a stumpwork butterfly and applied the same principle to making the ring.

I’m glad I tried stumpwork and I’m glad I was able to do it in a way that is my style. It’s been too long since I’ve done any space stitching. But I don’t foresee myself doing a lot of it in the future…
