June TSNEM – Log Cabin Pillow

June TSNEM - Log Cabin Pillow from Hugs are Fun
Making new pillow covers has been on my unofficial to do list for years. We’ve had the same ones since college and they were definitely showing their age.

I got a rainbow of fat quarters last year at Notions Nook in Rockford, IL with a vague desire to sometime make a quilt out of them. I finally gave up that idea and decided a pillow was much more attainable!
I have never made a traditional quilt block before or a pillow, so this month is a double whammy. I decided to do a log cabin quilt square for the pillows. I found a guide online that had the measurements for each piece, my pillows are 18″.
My Janome came with a 1/4″ foot and it is my favorite thing! It makes pieces strips like this so incredibly easy! I just have to hold the two pieces together and butt them up against the edge of the foot. It’s super fast and accurate, I love it.

I knew I wanted the pillow covers to be removable, our old ones had a zipper and they were taken off and washed a lot. I didn’t want to bother with using a zipper again though so I used the envelope pillow tutorial from Momtastic. It was harder than I expected to find a tutorial because so many of them used one single piece of fabric but because of the patchwork front I had two pieces.

Evie immediately tried to claim both pillows for herself saying she just wants to sleep with them every night in her bed. I promised I would make her some with fabric she picks out, so I guess I’ll be making more soon!

good job! they turned out great. 🙂 and the log cabin block is one of the perfect blocks to start with. and of course, a good piecing foot makes it all the more frustration free. i find it so satisfying making things like this for my home…next on my list is curtains for the bedroom.

I have been doing a lot of piecing of just strips of fabric. It gives a fun patchwork look and I don’t have to do any matching up of corners. Win win!
