September TSNEM – Quilting with a Walking Foot

September TSNEM - Quilting with a Walking Foot from Hugs are Fun

I originally planned on trying two new things this month – using my walking foot and binding. I got so caught up with how much I loved the walking foot that I didn’t even get to the binding. Instead I’ve just been quilting everything I can get my hands on.

One of the things that pushed me to get the Janome Magnolia 7360* instead of the next model down was that the 7360 came with a walking foot.

But it took months of actually having the walking foot before I finally got up the nerve to use it. When I took the class on the machine at the quilt shop I bought it at, everyone laughed when I said I had been too scared to try to change the foot. But it took the instructor 10 minutes to get it back on, which just added to my fear. I was convinced I would try to put it on and never be able to get the original foot back on. I finally just sucked it up and put on the walking foot. While it took me a bit to get on, it wasn’t bad and I’ve gotten really fast with getting it on now.

I put together this quick little patchwork rainbow thing. It was going to be a mug rug but it’s a bit big so I guess maybe it’s more of a trivet. The lines are a little wobbly but I absolutely love how it turned out. I actually took the time to use a ruler and draw out the lines with chalk, which I haven’t done on any of the other things I’ve done.

I made this set of coasters for my Best Birthday Ever Swap partner and had fun with the quilting, I did all of them differently.

I’m making Josh a DS case and put together these EPP triangles (twice due to cutting them wrong the first time… but that’s a story for a different post.). I really love this one a lot, it might be my favorite of what I’ve done so far.

And finally, I quilted these hexagons that I assembled over a year ago. I put them together with the intention of turning it into an iPad sleeve and then stalled on the project. Now that I’ve pulled it back out I feel a pressure to finish it, I just need to figure out the sizing for it.

I’m not sure I’m confident enough to quilt anything really big yet, but these little projects are definitely a good start and I’m looking forward to doing more! But you can also see that I’m so caught up with how much I love using the walking foot that I’m leaving a bunch of almost completed projects, so I should probably actually finish these up!

Beautiful and really well done! You have great taste in colors! I love the Zelda triforce! And my favorite is the cute little cross stitched heart on the quilted hexagon 🙂 I still do a lot of mistakes in sewing, it usually happens when I’m rushing 😉 My machine is a Janome (625E) too, though not as fancy as yours, I might need to upgrade! ;D

I kept putting off getting a new machine and I’m so glad I took the plunge. I’ve sewn more in the few months since I got it than ever before. I definitely still consider myself a beginner but I’m learning!
